Ah yes, TBI…… The best thing for the G54BT “Astron” series engines is to do away with its factory dual injector fuel delivery system, and put on a proper intake manifold with an intake plenum and a multi point fuel injection provision.
If you’re like me and you have to buy parts here and there to make that happen it can take a bit, but that’s no reason to side line the car right?
So I opted to bring the health of my original fuel system configuration up to par, before getting the rest of the parts to go to MPFI, so I can enjoy the car.
I started by resealing the vacuum manifold and the injector housing which are not only notorious for fuel leaks, but boost leaks as well.
With this seal kit I was able to get rid of a boost leak that had developed over time, and an occasional fuel leak which you could smell if the weather changed.
Couple that with a pair of upgraded injectors, a Walbro 255 replacement fuel pump, an Apexi fuel control and this gave my car the boost it needed to get a new lease on life.
Cold starts are better, there’s no annoying fuel smell, and the general lack of a fire hazard is quite welcome here.
If you hadn’t done this on your original injection configuration, or if you’re not driving your car because the progress is slow for gathering parts for an MPFI swap, this kit is too cheap to not purchase and put your car running as it would have when it was new.
Many of the rough running issues these cars have are directly related to vacuum leaks negatively effecting maf sensor readings and boost leaks when the housing gets pressurized again skewing maf sensor readings.
Just do it- it takes 15 minutes to fix and the car will thank you for it-
